Ka Leo Application

Ka Leo O Hawaiʻi, the student news organization, is recruiting new members for the Fall 2019 semester. The organization is also recruiting new editors who are looking to expand their leadership skills and gain managing experience. See the job openings listed below.

To apply for one of the open positions, please follow these steps:

  • Download and fill out the application
  • Email your application to humanresources@kaleo.org or drop it off at Hemenway 107 at the front desk
  • News Intern

    News Interns are responsible for, but not limited to:

    • Producing stories as agreed upon between intern, News Editor and Associate News Editor
    • Following the SPJ Code of Ethics
    • Becoming familiar with AP and Ka Leo style guidelines and tailoring their content to fit those guidelines
    • Reading, following, and upholding Ka Leo’s policies and procedures
    • Working with News Editor and Associate News Editor on content production, determining appropriate deadlines for submissions
    • Staying in contact with News Editor and Associate News Editor on a regular basis (responding to text messages, email or calls within 24 hours)
    • Attending weekly desk meetings or scheduling weekly individualized sessions with the appropriate editors
    • Being able to pass all training modules designated by News Editor and Associate News Editor as required for Staff Writers
    • Upholding quality standards in submissions, ensuring that their content was done to the best of their ability
    • Work with News Editor and Associate News Editor on multimedia content to accompany story (working with design or photos desk, if necessary)
    • Submitting complete content packages as consistent with the mandate put forth by Ka Leo’s policies and procedures

    Editorial interns are not paid for their content packages. Instead, the internship process is set up so that interns are prepared to advance to a paid staff writer position with little supervision needed. The length of the internship process is up to the discretion of the News Editor and Associate News Editor. *Typical length will be about 5 articles.

    Features Intern

    Features Interns are responsible for, but not limited to:

    • Being able to pass all training modules designated by Opinions Editor as required for Staff Writers
    • Upholding quality standards in submissions, ensuring that their content was done to the best of their ability
    • Work with Opinions Editor on multimedia content to accompany story (working with design or photos desk, if necessary)
    • Submitting complete content packages as consistent with the mandate put forth by Ka Leo’s policies and procedures

    • Attending weekly desk meetings or scheduling weekly individualized sessions with the appropriate editors
    • Being able to pass all training modules designated by Sports Editor as required for Staff Writers
    • Upholding quality standards in submissions, ensuring that their content was done to the best of their ability
    • Work with Sports Editor on multimedia content to accompany story (working with design or photos desk, if necessary)
    • Submitting complete content packages as consistent with the mandate put forth by Ka Leo’s policies and procedures

    • Reading, following, and upholding Ka Leo’s policies and procedures
    • Working with Executive Video Producer on content production, determining appropriate deadlines for submissions
    • Staying in contact with Executive Video Producer on a regular basis (responding to text messages, email or calls within 24 hours)
    • Attending weekly desk meetings or scheduling weekly individualized sessions with the appropriate editors
    • Being able to pass all training modules designated by Executive Video Producer
    • Upholding quality standards in submissions, ensuring that their content was done to the best of their ability
    • Work with Executive Video Producer on multimedia content to accompany story (working with design or photos desk, if necessary)
    • Submitting complete content packages as consistent with the mandate put forth by Ka Leo’s policies and procedures

    Video interns are not paid for their content packages. Instead, the internship process is set up so that interns are prepared to advance to a paid Video Producer position with little supervision needed. The length of the internship process is up to the discretion of the Executive Video Producer. *Typical length will be about 1-2 videos.

    Photos Intern

    Photos Interns are responsible for, but not limited to:

    • Covering assignments as agreed upon between editor and photographer
    • Following the SPJ Code of Ethics
    • Reading, following, and upholding Ka Leo’s policies and procedures
    • Becoming familiar with AP and Ka Leo style guidelines and tailoring their content to fit those guidelines
    • Working with editor to determine an appropriate timetable for their submissions
    • Staying in contact with their desk editors and communicating on a regular basis
    • Attending weekly desk meetings or scheduling weekly individualized sessions with their editors
    • Completing intern training modules designated as required for Photographers
    • Upholding quality standards in submissions, ensuring that their content was done to the best of their ability
    • Submitting complete content packages as consistent with the mandate put forth by Ka Leo’s policies and procedures when applicable
    • Working with the Photos Editor and following all mandates and guidelines set by them

    Photos interns are not paid for their content packages. Instead, the internship process is set up so that interns are prepared to advance to a paid Staff Photographer position with little supervision needed. The length of the internship process is up to the discretion of the Photos Editor. *Typical length will be about five projects. Intern process may be shorter, depending on editor recommendation.

    Comics Intern

    Comics Interns are responsible for, but not limited to:

    • Producing comics as agreed upon between intern and Comics Editor
    • Following the SPJ Code of Ethics
    • Reading, following, and upholding Ka Leo’s policies and procedures
    • Becoming familiar with AP and Ka Leo style guidelines and tailoring their content to fit those guidelines
    • Staying in contact with the Comics Editor and communicating on a regular basis
    • Attending weekly desk meetings or scheduling weekly individualized sessions with their editors
    • Passing all training modules designated by Comics Editor as required for Comics Interns

    Comics interns are not paid for their work. Instead, the internship process is set up so that interns are prepared to advance to a paid comics artist position with little supervision needed. The length of the internship process is up to the discretion of the desk editor. *Typical length will be about 2-3 content packages.
