Fire at Kennedy Theatre

A total of six units and twenty-two firefighter personnel left the scene at 12:19 p.m.

A small construction-related fire broke out at approximately 11:30 a.m. on the roof of Kennedy Theatre.

“What happened was a little bit of smoke got into the theatre and we wanted to make sure nobody went into the theatre and everybody that was in that building got out,” Sarah Rice, Department of Public Safety Community Programs manager, said.

The fire was extinguished prior to the Honolulu Fire Department’s arrival at 11:38 a.m.

According to Honolulu Fire Captain Scott Seguirant, the accident originated from a roofing company.

“Whatever fire there was, it was put out before we got there,” he said.

A total of six units and twenty-two firefighter personnel left the scene at 12:19 a.m. Damages from the fire are still being assessed.

A campus-wide alert was issued advising faculty, staff and students to avoid the area for now.

“We just want to make sure that people are not alarmed and that they got out of the building and the area so nobody has any complications from smoke inhalation,” Rice said.
