The Rainbow Wahine basketball team sought to earn its second straight win after coming off of Coach Laura Beeman’s 100th win, but came up short against Big West front-runner UC Davis (21-4, 11-1 Big West Conference) in a 68-56 loss Saturday night at the Stan Sheriff Center.
UH struggled in the first period with five turnovers and lost control in the second period getting outscored 21-8. The first half overall was an offensive struggle for the Rainbow Wahine with a high amount of turnovers, while only shooting 21 percent from the field and 18 percent from the three-point line. On a positive note, the Rainbow Wahine outrebounded the Aggies on the offensive glass 5-1 and grabbed 17 total rebounds compared to the Aggies 18 rebounds in the first half. The Aggies led the ‘Bows 28-8 going into intermission.
After a rough 20 minutes, UH went on a 7-0 run during a 1:38 span in the third quarter. No matter how large the lead became, the Rainbow Wahine played with their heart on their sleeves and maintained a competitive spirit. UH won the third period, 22-19.
The Rainbow Wahine fought until the buzzer, playing tough defense, holding the Aggies to only nine points in the final period. Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough to make a comeback, although UH outscored the Aggies 38-28 in the second half, outrebounded them 37-29 and its bench outscored UC Davis’ bench 20-14. With the 68-56 loss, UH falls to 10-15 overall and 3-9 in the Big West. This marks UH’s third loss out of the past four games.
Senior guard Sarah Toeaina led the ‘Bows with 17 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists. Sophomore guard Julissa Tago added 13 points and 4 rebounds.
The Rainbow Wahine look to bounce back next week on its two-game California road trip, playing against CSU Northridge next Thursday and Long Beach State University on Saturday.
