The University of Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine basketball team earned the No. 2 seed for the Big West Conference tournament after edging CSUN 69-68 at Northridge today. UH will have a double bye-week heading into next week's tournament.
"We're extremely proud of this team and what they've accomplished," head coach Laura Beeman said. "We had a goal of winning three straight games to put ourselves in this position, then to go out and do it is remarkable. As a staff, we're incredibly proud of what they've been able to do."
UH (14-15, 10-6 BWC) surpassed CSUN in the standings (16-14, 10-6 BWC) thanks to a tiebreaker of being the only team to beat regular-season champion UC Davis early in the season.
Sophomore guard Jadynn Alexander made a putback to help UH lead 67-60 with 4:50 left in the game. CSUN proceeded to score six straight points, but sophomore center Lauren Rewers hit a jumper with 1:15 left for a three point lead.
CSUN charged back with a 8-2 run to pull the score within one point (69-68). The 'Bows missed a three-pointer and CSUN regained possession of the ball. The Matadors called a timeout with 15 seconds left to play.
After inbounding the ball on their side of the floor, CSUN drove down the court, but Alexander poked the ball away, causing a loose ball to land in Channon Fluker's possession. Fluker shot from beyond the three-point arc over a double team of senior guard Tia Kanoa and Rewers. Her attempt fell short as time expired, helping UH edge the Matadors 69-68.
Sophomore forward Amy Atwell led the 'Bows with 18 points, shooting 4-of-6 from 3-point land, and pulled down six rebounds. Rewers finished with 10 points and a team-high nine rebounds while swatting four blocks.
