Michael Carter III sank the game-winning free throw with three seconds left to lift the 49ers (8-17, 3-6 Big West) past Hawai'i in a 50-49 upset on Wednesday night at the Stan Sheriff Center.
Hawai'i (14-9, 5-4 Big West) had its third straight loss, and moved into a three-way tie for second place in the conference with UC Santa Barbara and CSUN. The loss also snapped Hawai'i's five-game home win streak and was the team's first loss in the SSC since its loss to Georgia Tech in the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic on Dec. 25.
Senior guard Eddie Stansberry made 19 points and drained 5-of-10 three pointers in Hawai'i's loss. The Rainbow Warriors also got 13 points, nine rebounds and six assists from freshman Justin Webster.
Next up for the 'Bows is a first-place match-up with UC Irvine in a nationally-televised game on Feb. 15 at 7 p.m. At halftime, former UH legend Bob Nash will be honored. Nash will be the first UH men's basketball player to have his jersey retired.
