The University of Hawaiʻi Rainbow Warrior basketball team held off Colorado in a thrilling 70-62 win for day two of the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic on Sunday afternoon at the Stan Sheriff Center.
Junior guard Eddie Stansberry led four Rainbow Warriors in double-digit figures with 18 points. Junior forward Zigmars Raimo made his first career double-double (14) and tied a tournament record for rebounds after racking up 17 rebounds. Senior forward Jack Purchase added 14 points and guard Brocke Stepteau had 13.
In the first half, the 'Bows struggled offensively, shooting 31 percent in the first 20. Colorado also struggled, shooting 28 percent. Both teams were tied 24-24 going into intermission.
After the half, the 'Bows jump-started a 10-2 run to gain an eight point lead. Colorado answered back and Lucas Siewert shot a three-pointer to lead 52-46. Purchase and Stepteau led UH's rally and combined for seven of the team's final 10 points.
Stepteau made a diving layup to put the 'Bows up 56-54 with under a minute left in regulation.
Colorado's McKinley Wright shot a bucket with 17 seconds left to tie the game after the 'Bows did not convert on their final possession. UH went into its first overtime this season.
Both teams exchanged three-pointers to start OT, then UH scored eight of the game's next nine points. Sophomore guard Drew Buggs and Purchase hit a pair of three-pointers to build a 67-60 lead. Stepteau sealed the 70-62 win with a free-throw as time expired.
The 'Bows will resume play on Christmas day at 10 a.m.
