Senior forward Jack Purchase surpassed Zane Johnson’s all-time mark for 3-pointers as the Rainbow Warriors defeated UC Riverside in an 87-64 rout on Saturday night at the Stan Sheriff Center.
“It’s amazing, just to be mentioned with those guys in the same sentence is an honor,” Purchase said. “The best part about getting the record was that Brocke got me the assist, I’ve been with him for the past four years, living with him for the past three, he’s my best mate.”
The win ties the season series against UC Riverside, as Hawai‘i fell to the Highlanders, 71-75, back in January.
Along with Purchase, junior guard Eddie Stansberry and senior guard Brocke Stepteau combined for 55 points in the ‘Bows win.
Stepteau set the pace early for the Warriors, scoring 13 of their first 20 points in the first 10 minutes of the game.
“I just wanted to be aggressive, my shot felt good, I wanted to set the tone early,” he said. “I wanted to make the most of my last few games at the Stan.”
The team shot 62 percent from beyond the arc, and was 9-of-13. UH took a commanding 50-29 lead heading into the half. It was the most first-half points for UH all season.
In the second half, the ‘Bows continued to build their lead to as many as 29 points. The ‘Bows finished the game with 22 assists on 33 field goals.
“This was one of the great offensive performances we’ve had,” head coach Eran Ganot said. “Our goal was to have the best bench in the league, our depth wears people down. Our crowd loves team and hustle, these guys are checking all the boxes. This is a special group of guys who fought through some tough times.”
Next up for the ‘Bows is a pair of road games, starting at UC Santa Barbara on Feb. 21 at 6 p.m. HST.
