Coming off a 0-2 weekend, the University of Hawai’i Rainbow Wahine volleyball team managed to bounce back in a three set win over Coastal Carolina 25-17, 25-21 and 25-17 on Thursday night at Stan Sheriff Center.

UH (1-2) came out hot in the first set taking a 7-5 lead with kills from junior setter Norene Iosia and senior outside hitter McKenna Granato. Coastal Carolina (1-3) battled back to tie it, 7-7. UH quickly bounced back with a 6-0 run, capped off by sophomore middle hitter Skyler William's ace to make it 13-9 UH. Coastal Carolina committed a hitting error, while UH maintained the lead,18-11. Coastal Carolina fought back and cut the lead to 22-17, but UH was able to win the first set, 25-17.

Two service errors were committed both by UH and Coastal Carolina to start the 2nd set off, 1-1. Coastal Carolina came out and took and 5-2 lead with a kill from Coastal Carolina freshman opposite Anett Nemeth. UH continued to battle back tying the score, 6-6. A kill by Granato gave UH the lead, 12-9. UH continued to go on to winning the second set, 25-21.

Coastal Carolina fired back in the third set going on a 4-0 run to lead 5-1. The Chanticleers showed more of its aggressive side by advancing its lead to 10-4. UH proceeded to go on a 5-0 run, cutting its deficit to 10-8 with kills from Granato and senior opposite Angel Gaskin. UH reclaimed the lead 12-11 with a kill from Granato. After that, UH managed to pull away from the Chanticleers 25-17 with back-to-back kills from Granato. 

Coastal Carolina was led by freshman Anett Nemeth with seven kills and five digs.

Granato led UH with 15 kills and five digs. Senior setter Faith Ma’afala added 19 assists and Iosia added eight kills and 17 assists.

The Rainbow Wahine will take the court again versus Coastal Carolina University tomorrow for its second match at 7:00 pm at Stan Sheriff Center.
