The University of Hawaiʻi water polo went undefeated in the 2019 Rainbow Invite after winning against San Diego State 17-9 on Sunday morning at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex.
The Rainbow Wahine improve to 3-0, with senior attacker Irene Gonzalez leading all scorers with five goals.
In the opening frame, UH freshman Maxine Schaap hit a goal at the 6:41 mark. SDSU responded as Shelby Kraft scored in the next possession. After one quarter, UH held a steady 4-3 lead.
UH sophomore Carmen Baringo and Gonzalez scored one goals each in the second quarter to lead 6-3 over SDSU.
In the third quarter, UH freshman goalie Bridget Layburn made her collegiate debut, and finished with six saves and three goals in the second half.
In the fourth quarter, SDSU scored a fourth goal on the team's first possession. UH scored three straight to win the match, 17-9.
UH limited SDSU to 9-of-33 shooting. Senior utility Femke Aan and sophomore center Lalelei Mata'afa made three goals apiece.
UH continues its home-stand on Saturday, Jan. 26 against Arizona State at 12 p.m.
