Freshman Petra Melounova is one of 64 players nationally who has earned a spot in the NCAA Singles Championship. This is the third time a Rainbow Wahine has been invited to take part in the tournament, and she is only the second Wahine to qualify, with Cindy Nguyen having qualified in 2014 and 2015.
Melounova qualified for the tournament as she holds the highest ranking in the Big West Conference at No. 64. She is one of 12 automatic bids who will compete against 52 at-large bids.
Melounova went 13-0 in singles matches, with five matches unfinished. She went 6-1 on the first court and 7-0 on the second court.
Melanouva has also been named the Big West Conference Player and Freshman of the Year – just the third player ever to earn both awards in the same year.
Women’s tennis head coach Jun Hernandez was also named Big West Conference Coach of the Year, after leading the Wahine to an 8-0 conference record.
The tournament will take place in Athens, GA on May 24-29 in the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.
