The Rainbow Wahine basketball team (9-17, 4-9 BWC) defeated the UC Irvine Anteaters (4-23, 2-11 BWC) in their last road trip of the season.
Hawai‘i had a strong lead by the end of the first quarter 22-14. The Wahine performed better in turning turnovers into points with seven points off of their four turnovers.
The Wahine were still in the lead by the half 34-21. UCI was able to get the score within four points but couldn’t capitalize. Sophomore forward Leah Salanoa lead the Wahine with nine points. Hawai‘i’s shooting was better than it has been in the past six games, 46% from the field, 38% for three pointers, and 67% from the free throw line.
The Anteaters fought to stay in the game adding 20 points in the third quarter but Hawai‘i added 21 so UCI would still end trailing 55-41.
For the first time in seven games, the Wahine hit over 60 points. Hawai‘i finished shooting at 47% from the field, 34.5% for three point shots, and 75% for free throws. The Wahine had 44 rebounds, 21 assists and 14 turnovers.
Leah Salanoa continued to lead the team ending the night with 20 points and a career high six three pointers.
Junior guard Sarah Toeaina contributed 14 points, seven rebounds, and five assists.
The Wahine will play Cal State Fullerton (4-21, 1-11 BWC) on Feb 25 at 4 p.m. HST in Fullerton, CA.
