Arbor day Hawai'i

Pick up a free tree or shrub at the Hawaiian Electric Arbor Day Tree Giveaway, at 9 a.m., this Saturday, Nov. 4, at six locations across O‘ahu. You can select from among your favorite flowering trees and shrubs, beautiful native plants, and seven fruit trees.

Hawaiian Electric and its partners the Kaulunani Urban and Community Forestry Program, U.H. Urban Garden Center, Wahiawā Botanical Garden, and Waimea Valley will give away 500 plants, one plant per family, at each of the following locations — all starting at 9 a.m.:

Wai‘anae: Hawaiian Electric Kahe Power Plant

Pearl City: Urban Garden Center

Honolulu: McKinley High/Community School for Adults

Kailua: Hawaiian Electric Ko‘olau Base Yard

Wahiawā: Wahiawā Botanical Garden

Hale‘iwa: Waimea Valley

Arborists and O‘ahu Master Gardeners will be on site to answer gardening questions. Representatives from the Future Farmers of America, Kaulunani Urban and Community Forestry Program, Mālama Learning Center, and Outdoor Circle will be at select giveaway sites. The Urban Garden Center and Waimea Valley will also be holding plant sales.

While Arbor day is officially commemorated in Hawai‘i on the first Friday in November, environmentally conscious organizations across the state celebrate Arbor Day on the following Saturday. For information on the events taking place and the plants being given away, go to www.ArborDayHawaii.org.
