UH Mānoa welcomes back students

The university welcomed back new and returning students Aug. 22, 2022.

The University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa welcomed new and returning students with the start of the fall 2022 semester Aug. 22, ending the day with the annual Welina Mānoa kick-off event.

Over 100 booths featured various clubs, services, food vendors and more. KTUH, the student-run radio station, provided music and entertainment while the UHM band performed the university fight song and was accompanied by the UHM Cheer Team and Rainbow Warrior Dancers.

Etienne Briddell, a UHM senior and dorm RA, said she’s excited social activities are returning and wants to share some of the campus experiences she had pre-pandemic with incoming freshmen.

Briddell added she’s eager to “see how the university continues to adjust and provide a good experience.”

Briddell also said being back in person requires more caution, but she believes the university is doing a good job concerning student health and safety post-pandemic.

While UHM attempts to safely bring students back to campus for in-person classes and activities, masks are still required in most indoor locations including classrooms and laboratories.

The University continues to offer courses in various formats such as online and hybrid, but more fully in-person classes are being offered — up from only 19% of completely in-person classes offered in fall 2021.

Ella Esposito, a UHM Freshman, said she’s excited to meet new people and feels fine with the in-person format, especially since everyone is wearing masks — a common sentiment relayed by many students.

As pandemic restrictions ease, students have the opportunity to enjoy a more traditional college campus experience with over 200 student clubs and organizations to choose from.

Additionally, the Campus Center Board is scheduled to host a Welcome Back Bash today from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Campus Center Courtyard. For more information on the bash and to fill out the liability waiver, visit the CCBAC website.
