Hawai'i guard Lily Wahinekapu holds the ball in the third quarter of Saturday night's game.

On a night where it got the championship rings commemorating last season’s Big West title, Hawai‘i rebounded from a tough loss two nights earlier to put up one of its most complete games this season against Cal State Fullerton on Saturday.

1,127 fans inside SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center watched as Meilani McBee scored a career-high 22 points and a career-high six 3-pointers, with the UH guard also tying her career-high in steals with four in the Rainbow Wāhine women’s basketball team’s 66-53 win over the Titans.

UH guard Lily Wahinekapu, in her first game against her former team, added 14 points on 5-of-6 shooting — including 4-for-4 from 3-point range — and seven assists for UH (5-8, 3-1 Big West).

“Before the game, I was just focusing on my team and what I can do for the team,” Wahinekapu said. “Not so much my past playing at Fullerton. They respect me and I respect them.”

UH guard Daejah Phillips also recorded a career-high eight assists, as the Wāhine recorded 22 assists overall, the most they have recorded in a single game since Dec. 15, 2019.

“When we share the ball, we play really pretty basketball. That’s what was missing on Thursday,” UH coach Laura Beeman said. “We have a talented group of girls. We see that every day in practice, we see that when we play good and bad. I think that’s the frustration that comes from all of us when we don’t play the game the way it’s supposed to be played.”

Wahinekapu took over much of UH’s offense in the first half, scoring 11 of her 14 points in the first two quarters while also recording three assists on made layups by her younger sister Jovi Lefotu, Kallin Spiller, and Phillips.

McBee scored 17 of her 22 points Saturday in the second half, including three of UH’s six made 3s in the fourth quarter. Her 3-pointer with 5:10 to play in the quarter gave UH its largest lead of the night at 16 points.

“I’ve been struggling with my shot the past couple games and getting in shots today worked very well in my favor,” McBee said. “The coaches have been giving me little reminders that I’ve been working and I just shot the ball today.”

Gabi Vidimar led Cal State Fullerton (6-7, 1-3) in scoring with 16 points and five 3s, with Una Jovanovic adding 14 points on 4-of-14 shooting.

UH plays Long Beach State on the mainland at 1 p.m. HST on Saturday.
